Cafod update February 2007

CAFOD - livesimply
Tired of a world of consumerism and hype? Want to live simply, sustainably and in solidarity with people who are poor? Then get involved with livesimply - and get ready for change. Our faith tells us that God calls us to examine our lives, to reach our own full human potential and enable others to reach theirs. It’s time to put that faith into action. So why not take a livesimply promise like the 99% challenge, which asks us to live on 99% of our income and to think about the difference the other 1% could make to someone living in extreme poverty. Please take a direct debit from from the back of the church or use the envelopes provided. Please also visit: http://www.cafod.org.uk/get_involved/livesimply/

CAFOD Update - September 2006

Unearth Justice: CAFOD Campaign
Did you know for every gold ring made, there are 18 tonnes of waste? Why is it that countries very rich in natural resources such as gold and oil are home to many millions of the world’s poorest people? While mining generates revenue and creates jobs, it can also cause lasting damage to communities and the environment. CAFOD and its partners are working with communities living close to gold mines, to ensure that the earth and its resources – created by God and entrusted to us – are protected, respected and wisely used. Please take a postcard from the porch and ask Kevin McArthur, President and CEO of Glamis Gold, to stop gold undermining the poor in Honduras.

CAFOD Update - 18th May 2006

focusafrica
Thank you for supporting the parish’s commitment for today, tomorrow, together in East Africa over the last three years.  From this spring our new campaign will be focusafrica - a scheme to combat poverty in Africa. It’s a huge challenge, but over the next year CAFOD need to raise £1 million to help people caught in some of the world’s natural and man-made crises. These have been triggered by drought, failed crops, conflict and damaging international trade relations. The money you give generously each week will go to helping CAFOD achieve it’s target and build secure, long-term solutions to food shortages, such as training in methods of sustainable farming and introducing diverse ways of generating income.

For more information please visit www.cafod.org.uk/focusafrica and focusafrica prayer cards are available in the porch. Please pick one up on your way out after Mass.

CAFOD Lent Fast Day  - Friday 10th March 2006

Next Friday, 10th March,  is CAFOD Lent Fast Day, envelopes will be handed out after mass, please take one home and support CAFOD by sharing what you can with those in need. Don’t forget to fill out the gift aid slip on the back and pop it in your envelope. CAFOD has claimed an extra £7.5 million since 2001 thanks to gift aid. Whenever a UK taxpayer signs a gift aid form, CAFOD can claim another 28p for every pound they donate.

"To all the CAFOD supporters in Britain who help support this project - I can’t thank you enough" Eugenio Wu Morales, who runs a health project for students in Peru.

2006:The fight to end poverty continues.
Last year the call to end extreme poverty was heard as never before. But we must keep up the pressure to ensure that the world leaders keep their promises and ensure they go further to deliver trade justice to poor communities. Please take an envelope from the back of the porch and send your white band to the Prime Minister asking him to ensure that he keeps communities in poor countries across the world at the top of his agenda too.

Vote for Trade Justice
Wanted to go to Edinburgh but couldn’t? Now here’s your chance to make your views available to support Trade Justice and MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY.  Lobby your MP on Wednesday November 2nd at Westminster 12 noon-6pm. CAFOD along with other aid organisations are also collecting votes to send to the Government to rewrite the rules of international trade to fight poverty and protect the environment. Campaigners aim to collect a million votes by 10 December 2005,  please help by voting. You can vote online
http://www.cafod.org.uk/get_involved/campaigning/trade_justice/v4tj or send a postcard, which you can find at the back of the church.

CAFOD, as part of the Trade Justice Movement, is calling for:

1.  Rules that ensure governments, particularly in poor countries, can choose the best solutions to end poverty and protect the environment. These will not always be free trade policies

2.  To end export dumping that damages the livelihoods of poor communities around the world.
3.  Make laws that stop big business profiting at the expense of people and the environment.

CAFOD believes that everyone has the right to feed their families, make a decent living and protect the environment and in order to make poverty history we need Trade Justice, not free trade!

Please visit the CAFOD website for more information: http://www.cafod.org.uk/get_involved/campaigning/trade_justice

South Asia Earth Quake Appeal
CAFOD is supporting its partners working hard to bring emergency relief to the areas affected by the disaster in Pakistan, Kashmir, India, and Afghanistan. It is feared more than 40,000 may have died in the massive earthquake which struck South Asia in the early hours of October 8, with up to another 47,000 injured. The worst hit country is Pakistan, especially the diocese of Rawalpindi, where it is reported up to 10,000 families will need support. If you would like to give to the appeal, please find the emergency appeal box at the back of the church.
