32nd SUNDAY of ORDINARY TIME(C) 11th November 2007
Dear Friends,
We say, “I shall be filled when I awake with the sight of your glory, O Lord”. Our thoughts on heaven are conditioned and limited by our experiences of life and God here on earth. Today’s response to Psalm 16 answers the question; “What is it like in heaven”. It is to see the face of God of glory and to be taken up into perfect love with him. St Paul wrote, “No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him" (1 Cor 2:9). During November, we celebrate and praise God for all who have died, and are now with him, and the saints in glory. We remember in the Eucharistic Prayer of every Mass, and especially during November, those who have died but do not yet see God in the fullness of his glory. Our prayer is that they will be fully purified or purged from the contamination that attached to their souls, through human weakness and sin in this world. The redeeming and purifying grace comes through Christ’s sacrifice offered for all mankind at the Last Supper and on the Cross, and made present in the Mass.
The seven brothers were tortured and put to death because of their faithfulness to God (2 Macc.7:1-14), were sustained in the face of persecution, by their vision of God and hope of being raised up to eternal life. They could see God’s vision and purpose for his people, and they regarded turning their back on him as rejecting life and choosing death. All of us need from time to time to question “why did God make me, why am I here and where am I going”. We are here because God has created us and loves us, and given us a purpose in life. He wants us to grow in love and knowledge of him as we journey through life, so that we will see him face to face in glory, and be united with him in a holy communion of love in heaven.
Whilst we had an appeal last Sunday to help the poor and needy in developing nations, we also had the appeal for people to volunteer and help in a number of ways in our own parish. Some parishioners have indicated recently that they will be stepping down from their present responsibilities as soon as we have new people to take over those tasks. A good family grows when everyone takes responsibility and each one makes a contribution for the good of the whole family. In our parish family, or God’s family in our parish, we should take responsibility for each other and make our individual contribution to help the whole Christian family and community grow, and be a sign of God’s presence in our area. I ask people to fill in the forms we gave out last weekend in the newsletter and which are in the Church porch, so that you give glory to God by making your contribution for the service of others.
May the Lord let the light of his face shine upon you. Fr John
