THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER C 18th APRIL 2010
MHR 2010 CENTENARY NEWS
The MHR 2010 Centenary CD will be on sale after all Masses next weekend (24th/ 25th April) costing £5. The CD contains 16 lovely tracks recorded by the Parish Choir including a special African hymn sung by St Peter’s School Choir. Please do your best to buy at least one copy, as all profits will go to the Centenary Fund.
The next MHR 2010 event will be the Forty Hours Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in our Church. In order to make it easier and safer for parishioners to take part in this special time it has been decided to spread the forty hours over of the four days and early evenings of 4th to 7th May finishing with the First Friday Mass at 7:30pm on 7th May. We ask that parishioners sign the list at the back of Church as for each hour we need at least two people to be present at all times.
On Saturday 15th May the Parish Summer Cabaret featuring “that funny man” Mark Shillaker will take place in the Pastoral Centre. Tickets (incl. food) costing £15 for Adults & £8 for Concessions will be on sale soon.
Parish Choir - Sung Mass at Westminster Cathedral will now be on Sat. 25th September due to the Pope’s visit.
Other events… Centenary Mass on Monday 17th May to celebrate the visit of Bishop Rose from South Africa.
“Fun for the Family Day” on Saturday 5th June
THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER (YEAR C) 18th April 2010
My dear People,
Jesus asked Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me, more than these others do?” (John 21:1-19). Jesus told his disciples they would all run away and abandon him when he was arrested. When he told St Peter he would deny him three times before cockcrow, Peter protested saying he would die for him. It is said that by putting the question, “Do you love me?” to Peter three times, Jesus was giving Peter a threefold opportunity to retract his three denials, and to make a threefold profession of his love for his Lord.
“Do you love me?” is an important question; but the response; “I love you” is much more important for the questioner and respondent. We may have spontaneous and generous hearts and say like St Peter, “Of course, you know I love you”. Love is at its best when we are challenged by risk or have to make personal sacrifices. We show the depth of our love by sustaining our commitment when situations or people test us. Love is proven by forgiving and continuing to love when we are hurt, isolated, abandoned or rejected. Jesus suffered all these things from his closest friends, but he continued to love. He wanted them and us, to continue to love him. Jesus question to St Peter, “Do you love me?” is also addressed to each one of us.
St Peter tells us, “Obedience to God comes before obedience to men”, (Acts 5:27-41). This key part of Christian teaching and faithfulness to truth given by God in the Bible, has often led to conflict between Church and state. As the General Election approaches, it is important for us to know not only who we vote for but what they stand for. We should find out the moral positions of those seeking election as Members of Parliament so that political life is shaped by moral principles, and just not popular opinion. Our country faces difficult issues, and if those in public office are to give good leadership they need to see the value of Christian morality, rather than dismiss it. The Bishops of England & Wales booklet, “Choosing the Common Good”, helps identify issues and the need to be faithful to the truths of Christian teaching. Through Christ, God calls people to be faithful to the truth and reject what is false, for he says “all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice”.
May God bless you with the joy of Christ in this Easter season. Fr John
“CHOOSING THE COMMON GOOD” is a booklet by the Bishops of England and Wales, which deals with important social, moral and political issues at the General Election. Copies are available in the Church porch.

Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia:
For he whom you merited to bear, alleluia
has risen, as he said, alleluia. Pray for us to God, alleluia.
Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia
Because the Lord is truly risen, alleluia.
Let us pray: O God, who by the Resurrection of your Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ,
granted joy to the whole world: grant, we beseech you,
that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, his Mother,
we may lay hold of the joys of eternal life.
Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen
