EIGHTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME A 27th February 2011
Dear Friends,
“Set your hearts on the kingdom of God first, and on his righteousness, and all these other things will be given to you as well”(Matt. 6:24-34). Jesus spoke about the human heart many times, and the good and bad that comes from it. He highlighted the heart as centre of love, attraction and emotional commitment in a person “Where a person’s heart is, there is their treasure”. In the New Testament, he instructed people to keep the great Commandment of the Old Testament, given by God to Moses, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul, mind and will, and love your neighbour as yourself”. Today he tells us to make God the centre of love in our life, so that we may have a sense of contentment and fulfilment, as we recognise that God alone meets our deepest needs. St Augustine said, “Our hearts are not at rest until they rest in you, O Lord”. The unconditional love of God is the answer to our insecurities, and fulfils our deepest needs and heartfelt desires.
St Augustine also said, “give me someone who loves me and s/he will understand me”. If we truly love God, we will understand and be able to see his plan being worked out in our lives. If we do not love God, we will not understand him in the light of faith, and we will feel him to be remote or distant, and not involved in our life. When we love and trust God, we will find him present to us in adversity, weakness or illness, for he is always there for us. So, we can make our own Psalm 61 today, “Take refuge in God all you people. Trust in him at all times, Pour out your hearts before him”. We have mysteries, questions and problems with our faith, but the solution to all of them is to be found in knowing that we are deeply loved by God and that he calls us to love him in return. We love him by keeping his commandments and in that way we honour him, and do what is best for others. By choosing to live in the love of God and keeping his commandments, we live according to the design and will of our Heavenly Father and Creator. That is the way to a fulfilled life and it prepares us for the reward of eternal glory.
Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, the 9th March. Easter is really late this year, but it does have the advantage of giving us the opportunity to do something extra for Lent in more favourable weather conditions and with the longer evenings. I encourage people to make a special effort to practice and grow in faith during the season of Lent.
May God bless you and strengthen your trust in him. Fr John

FORTHCOMING EVENTS & NEWS
NEWS FROM ST PETER’S SCHOOL The week before half term, the children reflected upon the miracle of Lourdes and the message Bernadette received at the grotto. They thought about the responsibility Bernadette had at such a young age and the courage she must have possessed in order to carry through the wishes of Mary. They also heard the Hail Mary read in Latin and sang the beautiful hymn, ‘As I kneel before you’ which reminds us that we can lay our wishes and desires in front of Mary, our Mother, and she listens to us. It is delightful to know that two of our Parishioners visited our twin school in Blaauwbosch last week. They stayed in the orphanage and worked closely with the children and staff. It is lovely to see such solidarity and commitment.
HCPT GROUP 718, consisting of pupils from St John Payne School, present Up Late with 718, an evening of entertainment in aid of the groups travel to help care for disabled children in Lourdes at Easter. This is on Thursday 3rd March at 7.30pm. Tickets priced £5 adults, £3.50 under 16s are available from David Silver 01376 513580 or email dsilver24@hotmail.com
