NINETEENTH SUNDAY OF YEAR A 7th August 2011

Dear friends,

Like Peter in today’s Gospel we too have often set out confidently across the waters of life. However, as soon as the wind of troubles rise against us, and the waves of adversity begin to buffet us, we lose our nerve and begin to sink. Jesus’ rebuke, ‘Man of little faith! Why did you doubt?’ is directed at us too. Like Peter, we often start out courageously only to lose heart when the going gets tough. Many times we find ourselves in situations that call out for faith. It is amazing how our faith can grow at such times. Peter’s faith grew immensely when he was overwhelmed by doubts and cried out to Jesus. Then he experienced the Lord’s power to save. As we call out to the Lord in our need we too will experience our faith growing: ‘I believe; help my unbelief!’ (Mark 9:24).

Our world is very noisy. If we want to hear the voice of God we need some stillness and quietness. His voice is the quietest, gentlest voice of all because it is a voice of love. God did not make himself heard to Prophet Elijah in the sound of the mighty wind or the earthquake, but in the whisper of a gentle breeze (1Kings 19:11-13). God speaks to us in the most hidden parts of our being and in the promptings of our conscience. For those who know how to listen, God’s gentle voice can make itself heard even in the midst of a storm. Over the roar of wind and the waves, the apostles heard the gentle voice of Jesus saying to them, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid’ (Matt 14:22-23).

Lord Jesus, you desire that I love and serve you with a strong faith. Teach me to turn to you in times of doubts and weakness, so that you yourself might hold me and strengthen my faith.

May God’s loving kindness gently and powerfully guide you all. Fr. Dariusz
