TWENTYFIRST SUNDAY OF YEAR A 21stAugust 2011 Dearfriends,Today’s first reading talks about a man being dismissed from hishigh office and the keys of authority being passed to another (Isaiah22:19-23). The second reading contains a hymn of joyful praise to thewisdom of God, which is far too deep for us to understand (Romans11:33-36). In the Gospel Peter makes a marvellous declaration offaith in Christ. Jesus gives him the keys of the Kingdom of Heavenand the power to bind and to loose (Matthew 16:13-20). In the Catechism of the Catholic Church we read: “Simon Peter holdsthe first place in the college of the Twelve (Mk 3:16); Jesusentrusted a unique mission to him. Through a revelation from theFather, Peter had confessed: ‘You are the Christ, the Son of theliving God.’ Our Lord then declared to him: ‘You are Peter (Rock)and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades willnot prevail against it’ (Mt 16:18). Christ, the ‘living stone’,thus assures his Church, built on Peter, of victory over the powersof death. Because of the faith he confessed Peter will remain theunshakeable rock of the Church” (CCC 552). Let us consider: who do people today say the Son of Man is? Teacher, idealist, faith-healer, revolutionary, prophet, saint? But what aboutus? Who do we say He is? As a great Christian writer once said, themost important thing about any person or church or society is howthey answer that question. Our lives on the earth and after deathdepends on finding an answer to that question. Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Christ, the Son of the livingGod. I am deeply grateful that the Father has revealed this to me,but I am weak, and so often fail to honour you, love you and trustyou. Help me be a firmer witness to the faith you have given me. May your faith be a source of strength in both joys and sorrows. Fr.Dariusz WHAT’SONTHISWEEK
