THE REGINA COELI

(This is said instead of the Angelus during the Easter Season)

Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia:

For he whom you merited to bear, alleluia has risen, as he said, alleluia.

Pray for us to God, alleluia.  Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia

Because the Lord is truly risen, alleluia.

Let us pray:

O God, who by the Resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,

granted joy to the whole world: grant, we beseech you,

that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, his Mother,

we may lay hold of the joys of eternal life.

Through the same Christ our Lord.  Amen

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER (B)                             22 APRIL 2012

 Dear Parishioners,

Jesus stood amongst them and said to them “Peace be with you” (Lk.24:35-48).  The Gospels show the disciples traumatised by Jesus’ sufferings and death. They were going through a bereavement process and when the Lord came and stood amongst them, he found them in a state of alarm and fright, agitated and full of doubt. When he walked with them on the road, something prevented them from recognising him and they told him their hopes were ruined as they expected him to establish the kingdom. Like a good counsellor, Jesus asked them to tell him what had happened and how they felt, and he showed them that his suffering and death was a fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies, which said he would rise from the dead. Every time he appeared to them he offered them his Peace.

In our world people’s lives are damaged and destroyed by conflict, violence and war. People suffer because relationships are broken and they hurt. Christ wants peace for us and commands: “Love one another as I have loved you” – “forgive your enemies and do good to those who hate you”, “pray for those who persecute you”. It is easy to say these things, but it can be most difficult to forgive and make our own the prayer of Christ on the Cross, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do”. By asking our Lord to help us and do the forgiving for us, we can forgive those who have hurt us most. The “Miracle Hour”, prayer book in our Church porch, is most helpful with regard to forgiveness.  By being open to God and having a desire to live according to his will, we can receive the peace of Christ, which is not the peace the world gives us, but a “peace which surpasses all understanding” and is a fruit of the Holy Spirit in our life.

On Good Shepherd Sunday, next week we pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. We have seven students training to be priests in our diocese. David Pearce, Matthew Bemand, Nicholas De Keyser & Eamonn Hyde are at St John’s Seminary, Wonersh. Patrick Daly is at the Beda College and Gary Dench at the English College, in Rome. Brenden Thompson is at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham. Nick DeKeyser, who is very much part of our parish, will be ordained priest, at Brentwood Cathedral on Saturday, 6th October. Please pray asking the Lord of the harvest to call people to be priests and religious so that the Word of God may be preached and his grace ministered to people in our time. In the church porch there are prayer cards to pray for vocations and priests. There is also very good material on the website; brentwoodvocations.org and anyone who wishes to find out about the priesthood or to become a priest can speak to their priest or Fr Dominic Howarth at 71 Wickhay, Basildon SS15 5AD (Telephone 01268 453968 or e-mail: frdominic@brentwoodvocations.org

Next weekend, we will welcome Fr Jim McManus CSSR and Marie Hogg to our parish, to lead our Parish Mission. Please make a real effort to participate and attend our Mission, the details of which are given in the Parish Mission leaflet.

May the risen Christ, who is with us always, bless us with his peace.  Fr John

CONFIRMATION will be celebrated in our parish on Pentecost Sunday, 27th May. Next session is on Sunday 29th April 3.30pm in the Pastoral Centre.

YOUTH MASS The final one of the academic year is at 5pm on Sunday 13th May when we pray for success in forthcoming exams.  We encourage all our young people to attend this Mass, especially the Confirmation candidates and Year 13s for whom it is their final Youth Mass after many years of great participation.  There is a preparation meeting for the Mass at 7pm in the Lounge on Tuesday 24th April.

We urgently need some more adult people to help with organising the Mass.

JOURNEY IN FAITH FOR YOUTH (JIFFY) For children in non-Catholic Primary Schools on Saturday, 28th April in the Lounge of the Pastoral Centre at 2.30pm. Detals from Fiona D’Silva at f.dsilva@talktalk.net or 655172.

TALKS ON THE CATHOLIC FAITH A number of adults have been making their journey of faith in our parish, since last September. Five received the Sacraments in our Parish this Easter. It has been a blessed time of sharing faith for and seeking to understand God’s will in our faith journey programme on Monday evenings. Jesus’ mission was to bring God to people and to bring people to God. This course will resume in September and we will welcome anyone interested in finding out about our faith or becoming Catholic. This year’s Group will meet again on Monday, 23rd April at 8pm and the topic will be Catholic Devotions.

ST PETER’S SCHOOL Fr. Dan came to school to celebrate our Easter Mass this week. The children heard about how we can begin to see Jesus through fresh eyes and come to belong to his family which excludes no one. The children reflected upon the joys of Easter and the need to keep the message of Easter alive so that we are all truly an “Easter people”.

‘COME AND SEE’ weekend 28th/29th April The Community of Our Lady of Walsingham invites single young adults aged 18-38 to their discernment weekend.
