SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER B                      13th May 2012

FIRST HOLY COMMUNIONS will be celebrated at special Masses in our Parish on Saturday 19th and 26th May at 11 am. At Baptism, parents prayed “The Lord’s Prayer” and looked to their child’s first Holy Communion, when Christ would give himself to their child. Parents and children have been preparing for first Holy Communion since Baptism, and particularly over the past few months.

THE REPOSITORY SHOP in our Church porch will be open at all Masses at the weekend with a variety of Holy Communion Gifts. There are also many other religious items of interest. Please come and look at our selection for a personal gift for this special time.

THE BLESSED SACRAMENT PROCESSION will be on Saturday the 16th of June at 10.30am. It will start with a service in the Parish Hall and there will then be a procession into the Church, where there will be a service and Blessing with the Blessed Sacrament.

The GOING FORTH MASS will be at 11am on Sunday, 24th June.  The children will be presented with their First Holy Communion Certificates and we will have a celebration afterwards in the Hall, for the children and their families.

OUR CHURCH CAR PARK is restricted to First Holy Communion families and their guests up to 1.30pm on Saturdays, 19 & 26 May. We need volunteers to supervise our car park and direct guests to other parking once ours is full.  Please contact our Parish office on 624891.

SIXTH SUNDAY IN EASTER B                                     13th May 2012

Dear Parishioners,

Jesus said, “This is my commandment; Love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:9-17). Love is easy when we like and enjoy the company of the person who is the focus of our attention. When we are confronted with a difficult or not very likeable person or problem situations, then the quality of our love is tested. Love is at its greatest when a person makes sacrifices for another in what is right and good. Jesus saw his life as a union of love with his Father. He was prepared to make the sacrifice of love to save people from condemnation and death, for he put his Father’s will not his own first. In agony, in the Garden of Gethsemane, he prayed in love, “Father, not my will, but yours be done”. Our instinct may be the opposite, and whilst we might not say, we may well think, “Not your will, but mine be done”. Jesus teaches us the way of love for God and one another in the Lord’s Prayer when we say, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”.

Jesus, by sacrificing his life in suffering and death, showed his love for God, his Father, and for people was total.  He tells us to remain in his love by keeping his commandments. When we ignore or break them, we walk away from love. There is no love when we put ourselves before God or others. When we put ourselves first and fail to sacrifice our self for the sake of another and for what is right, we deny ourselves growth in love. Love is a gift of God planted in our heart, and it is only by sharing love and giving it away, does it grow and enrich others.

The more a person loves, the greater the glory they give to God, and the greater the blessings they bring to others. To live in love is to be in right relationship with God and people. Our age leads to centring on self, so we need to sacrifice in little things, to train our self for sacrifices in more challenging things. We grow in love by making sacrifices which sustain our commitments and relationships.

We congratulate the children and their parents, who received their first Holy Communion in our parish, on Saturday. In receiving Christ in Holy Communion, they receive the greatest gift of love, in which God gives himself to us. We thank our team of Catechists and their assistants who have given so generously of their time and expertise to help prepare the children for first Holy Communion and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

May the Lord bless you with his love and the new life of grace.  Fr John

CONFIRMATION will be celebrated in our Parish on Pentecost Sunday, 27th of May, at 11am MassWe ask parishioners who usually attend 11am Mass to try to attend another Mass that weekend.  Thirty-seven young people have been preparing for the Sacrament since January. OFFERINGS THANK YOU for your generous Offerings £1539.89 (of which £1091.11 was Gift Aided) for our Parish last weekend and for £70.21 in the CAFOD Box for our Parish CAFOD Project Connect2Rwanda.

THANK YOU to the Servers and their Families. I was very humbled and surprised to receive your very kind gifts marking my retirement from M.C. for the Altar Servers. It was one of the few times in my life when I was speechless. I would like to thank everyone who contributed. I am not sure what to spend the voucher on, but will try to obtain something that reminds me of all of you. The last 9 years have been very rewarding watching all the servers grow from nervous and quiet 8 year olds to in some cases not so quiet 18 year olds. Some do not make the full term but I have, on many occasions felt very proud of the standards of serving at The Most Holy Redeemer Church and have heard several times that our servers are admired throughout the Diocese. I leave you in very capable hands and thank Anne Marie Rainsford and Sara Dean for taking over as Parish M.C's. I will still be watching from the church so don't forget to wear those school shoes and continue to assist Father John and the Priests at the altar. Thank you again for all your best wishes. Mike Sinnott

NEWS FROM ST PETER’S This week all the children took part in the BBC’s World's Biggest Assembly. This was an opportunity for the children to link up with children around the world and air their views on what matters to them. Children thought about issues in their local areas or concerns directly affecting them. It was great to see what is important to children in other parts of the world. Ultimately the children could see that though we come from very different parts of the world, in many ways we all share a common goal. As said by Anne Frank,' we all live with the objective of being happy. Our lives are all different and yet the same'

BAPTISM Congratulations to the parents of Evie Fairmaner and Abbie Judge who were Baptised in our Church last Sunday. We pray that the Lord will help them to bring up their children in the knowledge and love of God.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS & NEWS

PARISH HALL AGM followed by ordinary meeting, of the Hall Management Committee will be held at 8pm on 22nd May in Room 3. All are welcome.

STEPPING STONES – Bereavement Group – Whether you have recently lost family or friends or were bereaved a long time ago, you are welcome to come for a coffee and friendly support. It will be held in the lounge of the Pastoral Centre on Thursday 24th May 10.30am – 12 noon. You are welcome to come for as long or as short as you wish - there is no on-going commitment. For further information please contact Alison on 654385 or Karen 655033.

WALK FOR WARMTH – we recently had to replace two of the heaters in our Church that could not be repaired and the other heaters will soon have be replaced and the system updated.  There are insufficient funds in the Parish to do this, so we need some fundraising activities. We have entered the Parish into The Fun Walk at Barleylands, organised by John Baron MP, and the amount we raise as a Parish will be topped up by Mr Baron’s bonus pot.  It takes place on Sunday 27th May at 1pm. There are 2 walks, one is 3 miles long, and the other much shorter and suitable for toddlers, families and the disabled. There will be live music, a BBQ and lots of charity stalls - a fantastic family day out. If you would like to take part, contact the Parish Office or Deirdre Pembroke on 650978 for details and sponsorship forms. If you would be prepared to be one of the marshals please contact us. If each family in the Parish could donate £10, this would go a long way to the covering the cost of the heating system.
