Feast of the Annunciation - 25th March 2020
Wednesday 25th March 2020
The 25th of March is when we celebrate the solemnity of the Annunciation, the Feast which commemorates when God became incarnate, taking on human flesh in the womb of Mary.
Mary was chosen by God to be the mother of His Son, Jesus, the God-Man who embraces all humanity & all of creation, to restore us to God's Kingdom in one great act of love.
Taken by surprise when the Angel Gabriel visited her, announcing that Mary was "highly favoured" by God, and not to be afraid, Mary listened quietly as she was told she would conceive a son, by the power of the Holy Spirit, whom she should call Jesus.
Despite the potential risks and danger Mary could face in her community as an engaged, yet unmarried pregnant Jewish woman, she makes an astounding response to the Angel, saying, "I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done unto me according to your word." (Luke 1:38).
Mary showed extraordinary faith when she agreed to allow the Son of God to take up his dwelling place in her. Her 'Yes' played an essential role in our salvation, and God's plan to come and dwell among us. She was the perfect 'tabernacle', the empty space, full of grace, where God could act and fulfil His plan for our redemption and salvation.
Mary is the Virgin-Mother who fulfils Isaiah's prophecy (7:14). She is the first disciple, Mother of the Church and spiritual mother of us all.
Mary, sitting beside her Son Jesus in heaven, is also a very powerful intercessor for humanity. On this feast-day of the Annunciation, as the world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic and the unprecedented restrictions we are experiencing in our country and around the world, let us ask her to pray for us, to help us stay faithful, trusting in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who chose Mary to be mother of our Saviour, who came to dwell among us.
God bless and protect you and your families.
