SIXTH SUNDAY OF YEAR C 14th FEBRUARY 2010
LENT
ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT will be held in Church on the Fridays of Lent from 9.15 am to 10.15 am and from 10.45 am to 12 noon, as well as the usual times on Tuesdays and Saturdays. We need to have someone present in the Church during these times. Please put your name on the rota in Church if you can offer half an hour on Friday. Mass will be celebrated at 10.15 am and at 7.30pm with Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent. Stations of the Cross & Mass on Fridays at 7.30 pm.
THE RITE OF ELECTION for adults going forward to Baptism, Reception into the Church, or Holy Communion and Confirmation will be celebrated at Brentwood Cathedral next Sunday at 3.00pm. This year Kelly Brown, Hayley and Mark Dear, Josephine Saunders and Nicola Walker will be presented to Bishop Thomas, with candidates from other parishes in our Diocese. May the Lord bless them and all who are on their faith journey.
CAFOD LENT FAST DAY is 26th February. This year is the 50th anniversary of Lent Fast Day and were asking you to give it up! Most of us usually give up something for Lent like biscuits, wine, etc. on a Friday. This year why not create some amazing changes for people who live in the developing world by giving the money saved to CAFOD? This money, for example, could go towards a bicycle to help a health volunteer take food to orphaned children. You can read more about the impact our Lenten sacrifices could have in the CAFOD Fast Day leaflets that will be distributed next weekend with the envelopes for your offerings. If you would like to know more about the history of Fast Day, pick up one of the leaflets - "50 years of giving at Lent". See posters on the CAFOD Notice Board or visit: http://www.cafod.org.uk/get-involved/give-it-up
Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time C 7th February 2010
Dear Friends,
“Happy indeed is the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked…. whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who ponders his law day and night” (Ps.1). This first psalm calls people to follow God and trust in him by listening to and responding to his word, and it contains a promise of happiness and blessings for those who choose to live close to him. The Prophet Jeremiah reflects and repeats the sentiments of Psalm 1 that there will be a “blessing for the man who puts his trust in the Lord. He is like a tree that thrusts its roots in the waters” (17:5-8). These blessings or happiness that come to people are spelled out in St. Luke’s account of the Beatitudes (6:17-26) in which Christ promises that God will always be close to those who are in some suffering, pain or impoverishment. In that sense, we can see that they are the people who share most closely with Christ his life’s journey on earth.
Christ made many journeys during his life, but in the course of the forty days of Lent, which we start this week on Ash Wednesday. We remember and go with him into the desert; to the mountain of transfiguration; on his entry to Jerusalem, and on the Way of the Cross. He was led into the desert by the Spirit after his Baptism, where he was alone for forty days, and was tempted by the devil when he was weak and hungry. He calls us to accompany him for the forty days of Lent by leaving aside some of our preoccupations and busyness so as to draw close to him in prayer. He calls us to draw near to God with him by going up to the mountain of transfiguration with him and his disciples, where our circumstances and situations will be changed by praying with him in the presence of God. He invites us to go with him in triumph to the Holy City, Jerusalem, and proclaim him the Messiah and Saviour of God’s people, and lay down our lives before him in humility and love. He calls us to walk and stumble with him on the Way of the Cross, so that we may share in his triumph over suffering and death and come to the glory of his resurrection.
In Lent there are many opportunities in our Parish and Church to draw closer to God. I hope you will make special efforts to attend Mass not only on Sundays but if possible on a weekday. There are the times of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings. We can also nourish our life with a little spiritual reading each day, and there is an excellent choice of booklets in the Church porch for that purpose. A key part of Lent in the Parish this year will be our two-week Mission. Finally, the Church calls us to pray in Lent for the good of our souls, to fast for the good of our bodies and give alms for the good of those in need.
May we listen and respond to Christ’s call during Lent. Father John
